At Capalaba State College, we are committed to delivering a high-quality education that supports every child to grow as a successful learner.
Curriculum Delivery
We implement Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum in the key learning areas of:
- English
- Mathematics
- Health and Physical Education
- All learning areas in Prep
Our Junior Campus is following the Department of Education's staged implementation plan, with Science and Technologies to be implemented in 2026, and HASS, The Arts, and Languages in 2027.
Curriculum planning is led by our Head of Curriculum, who supports teachers in delivering consistent, curriculum-aligned units across all year levels. Our curriculum is designed to reflect the needs of our students, make meaningful connections across learning areas, and embed general capabilities and cross-curricular priorities.
Pedagogy at Capalaba State College
At Capalaba State College, our whole-school approach to pedagogy is flexible, responsive, and continuously evolving. We are committed to ensuring every student is engaged, challenged, and supported to succeed.
We believe that high-impact teaching is grounded in evidence and shaped by the unique context of each classroom. Teachers draw on a range of pedagogical approaches and strategies, using their professional judgment to determine what works best for their students.
Our approach is guided by three key principles:
1. Curriculum – Knowing What Needs to Be Taught
We maintain a deep understanding of the Australian Curriculum, including its intent, content descriptions, achievement standards, and general capabilities. This ensures that all planning and teaching is aligned, purposeful, and targeted to support every student's progress.
2. Learners – Knowing Our Students
We design and deliver learning experiences based on a thorough understanding of the diverse backgrounds, strengths, needs, and interests of our students. Teachers make informed decisions about how content is delivered, differentiating instruction to support access, engagement, and challenge for every learner.
3. Learning – Knowing How Students Learn
We understand that learning is a process that develops over time through purposeful interaction, feedback, reflection, and practice. Teachers use a range of practices—such as explicit instruction, gradual release of responsibility, and collaborative learning—to support students as they move from surface to deep understanding.
This approach empowers teachers to make informed choices about the most effective practices to support achievement, engagement, and wellbeing. We recognise that pedagogy is not one-size-fits-all—it is a dynamic, professional practice that adapts to meet the changing needs of our students and classrooms.
Meeting the Diverse Needs of Our Students
At Capalaba State College, we are committed to providing an inclusive learning environment that supports the success of every student. We recognise and celebrate the diverse strengths, backgrounds, and learning needs of our students.
Teachers differentiate their instruction to ensure all learners can access, participate in, and progress through the curriculum. This includes:
- Adjusting content, process, and product based on student readiness and need
- Using data to inform teaching and target support
- Providing multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning
- Embedding a strengths-based approach to build confidence and engagement
Support is provided through collaborative partnerships between classroom teachers, specialist staff, inclusion teachers, and teacher aides. Our team works closely with families to ensure students receive the right support at the right time, both academically and socially.
We value every learner and their family and strive to create a culture where all students feel safe, supported, and empowered to achieve their personal best.
Specialist Programs
All students have access to high-quality specialist teaching in:
- Health and Physical Education
- Science
- Chinese
- The Arts (Dance, Music, Drama)
These specialist programs are designed to deepen students' skills, extend their learning beyond the classroom, and provide authentic experiences across a broad curriculum.
Digital Literacy
At Capalaba State College, we are committed to developing students' digital literacy so they can participate confidently, safely, and responsibly in an increasingly digital world.
Digital tools and platforms are integrated purposefully into classroom learning to:
- Enhance engagement and creativity
- Deepen understanding of curriculum content
- Build essential skills in communication, collaboration, and critical thinking
Teachers use digital technologies in ways that support and extend learning, selecting tools that align with the intent of each lesson and the needs of the learners. Students access iPads or computers as part of their classroom learning, using programs and platforms that are familiar, developmentally appropriate, and aligned with curriculum expectations.
Digital literacy is explicitly taught and embedded across the curriculum, with students learning to:
- Create, analyse, and communicate information using digital tools
- Evaluate the reliability of online sources
- Use technology safely, ethically, and responsibly
- Develop transferable digital skills that support learning across all subject areas
Our approach supports the development of the ICT Capability and prepares students for the demands of future learning, work, and life.
Respectful Relationships Education
At Capalaba State College, Respectful Relationships Education is a key component of our whole-school approach to student wellbeing, inclusion, and personal development.
Through dedicated lessons and everyday classroom practice, students are supported to build the social and emotional skills needed to:
- Develop and maintain positive relationships
- Communicate effectively and resolve conflict
- Demonstrate empathy, resilience, and respect for diversity
- Recognise and respond to unsafe or inappropriate behaviour
Respectful Relationships Education is integrated across learning areas, particularly within the Health and Physical Education curriculum, and aligns with the Australian Student Wellbeing Framework. It supports our commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where all students feel valued and connected.
This education also forms part of our broader work in:
- Promoting gender equality
- Preventing bullying and discrimination
- Empowering students to become active, informed citizens
Our whole-school approach ensures that Respectful Relationships Education is not just a program, but a shared responsibility and embedded culture across the college community.
Religious Instruction (RI)
Religious Instruction is offered fortnightly on Thursday afternoons for students in Years 1 to 6. Students participate based on the information provided by parents/carers at enrolment or through written notification.
Capalaba State College respects the diverse cultural and religious backgrounds of its students and families, and RI is delivered in accordance with the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006. Families can contact the school for more information about the RI program.
Student Leadership
Students on our Junior Campus are encouraged to develop their leadership skills and contribute positively to our school community. Leadership roles include:
- Junior Campus Captains and Vice-Captains
- Leaders in Environmental, Cultural, and Learning & Wellbeing Portfolios
- Sports Captains
Student leaders serve as role models, support whole-school initiatives, and contribute to community events such as ANZAC Day, Investiture Ceremonies, and school assemblies. Leadership applications open in Term 3 for the following year.
Excursions and Camps
Excursions are carefully planned to connect learning to real-world contexts and to strengthen relationships within student cohorts. Each experience is designed to enrich the curriculum and promote active engagement.
A highlight of our Outdoor Education Program is the Year 5 Camp, offering students the opportunity to build independence, resilience, and teamwork in a supportive environment.
