Principal's welcome

My name is Lachlan Thatcher.

I have been at Capalaba State College since 2014, first as a Secondary Principal, then a Primary Principal, and now, very fortunate to be the College Principal.

I like to think of myself as a little different to my peers. You will not see me wearing a badge – you should know who I am and what I look like, and can chat to me most mornings as I play with the students before school. I am also known for my short and sweet speeches at ceremonies!

I am a curious person. I am always looking for ways to make teaching and learning easier and more enjoyable; promoting a healthy work life balance for our students and our staff; with a focus on the whole social and emotional person, that contributes to our community; not just the academic focus. There is always a way to get things done simply and with common sense.

It take courage to make education modern and appropriate for the times that our students live in, and the future that they will be looking for careers in. I like taking risks with alternative approaches. In 2019, we introduced our Montessori Program, and have a waiting list until 2025! In 2020, we introduced our flexible learning class, and could introduce two or three more if we wanted to. We introduced an iPad program for every student on our Senior Campus and work completion rates have skyrocketed. We are exploring alternate ways to get more done in our lessons, in ways that are more engaging without overloading our students or teachers. Our current Prep students will graduate thirteen years from now. The world will be very different, and we need to prepare them for that.

I am constantly connecting with others and reviewing what other schools are doing, and sit on a number of regional panels to inform best practice, not only across the Redlands Coast, but the entire South East Region. As we are one of the few schools growing in the Redlands, we are often poaching staff from our neighbours because of their expertise and local knowledge.

I look forward to seeing you around the College.
