Junior Secondary

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​In the Junior Secondary phase of education, Years 7-10, students are taught the Australian Curriculum. The Australian Curriculum is made up of eight learning areas. These learning areas are English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, The Arts, Technologies, Health and Physical Education (HPE), and Languages. ​​

Years 7 and 8

Years 7 and 8 provides students with a set of core skills and learning frameworks to act as both a foundation for their future studies. Students study English, Mathematics, History and Science across both years. They also study HPE and Languages for one semester each year. Students will rotate through the Arts and Technologies subjects each term in Years 7 and 8, this allows students to experience all the electives that we offer at Capalaba State College. Electives include:

  • Digital Technologies
  • Design and Technologies
  • Food Specialisations
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Media Arts
  • Music
  • Visual Arts

Years 9 and 10

Years 9 and 10 provide students with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of core subjects while exploring areas of personal interest, preparing them to make informed choices about their senior secondary subjects and pathways. Each year, students study four core subjects and choose four semester-long electives aligned to their learning pathway. Detailed information about all subjects is available in the Subject Handbooks.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) Courses – year 10

In partnership with external RTOs, we offer a range of nationally recognised VET qualifications onsite to year 10, to prepare students for the workforce:

  • HLT23221      Certificate II in Health Support Services*
  • MEM20422    Certificate II in Engineering Pathways* 

*Please note: Enrolment in these vocational qualifications is subject to the Department of Training and Employment's final publication of the 2026 Career Ready funded qualifications. Capalaba State College will confirm delivery arrangements with SAS before finalising Career Ready VET enrolments for 2026.  

School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships:

From Year 10, students at Capalaba State College have the option to participate in a School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT). Typically, a SBAT involves attending school four days a week for regular classes and spending the fifth day in the workplace, where students gain hands-on experience and are paid at the award rate. 

Our Industry Liaison Officer is available to assist students in exploring and securing these opportunities. ​
