NAPLAN testing is done online
from this year (except for year 3 writing).
Timetables will be published just prior to NAPLAN.
As children progress through
their school years, checks must be made along the way to see how well they are
learning the essential skills of reading, writing and mathematics – skills that
will set them up on the path to success as adults.
NAPLAN is a point-in-time
assessment that allows parents and carers to see how their child is progressing
in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their
peers throughout Australia. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional
information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress.
NAPLAN is now completed online
and is a tailored test that adapts to student responses, providing better
assessment and more precise results.
What do we do
with NAPLAN Data?Schools generally receive their
students’ NAPLAN reports and data sets from mid-August to mid-September,
depending on their state or territory. We will notify you when the reports are
being sent to your home. The same report format is used for every student in
Australia.
We use NAPLAN
data to reflect on our teaching. - Why does one class perform
exceptionally well with sentence structure, but not the other class? What
is that Teacher doing that seems to be working?
- Did a particular intervention strategy
work?
- Did we miss teaching
something throughout the curriculum that we need to revisit?
- Are our students performing at age
appropriate levels?
How do we
prepare for NAPLAN?We do very little to prepare
students for NAPLAN. Being overly prepared for the test defeats the purpose of
the test itself.
Not only is excessive preparation
stressful for children, but we also want honest feedback from NAPLAN about our
teaching practices. We want to know that how we teach reading, writing,
spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy is the best way.
We do some test 'familiarisation'
to show students what the test looks like, but that is it.
The skills being tested are
skills that we regularly teach each year. If we had to do special test
preparation, it means that we aren't doing our job throughout the year.
Absences:We have plenty of time during the
testing window (15 - 27 March 2023) for students to make up missed tests.
Adjustments for
students with disability:ACARA encourages students to participate in NAPLAN
tests based on their needs identified through the Nationally Consistent
Collection of Data on school students with disability (NCCD). Adjustments are
available in NAPLAN tests for students with disability to support students’
access to the tests.
Adjustments should reflect similar support and
assistance provided in the classroom for assessment activities. An example
might be a NAPLAN support person recording an answer at the direction of the
student. However, not all adjustments provided in a classroom setting are
applicable for NAPLAN. Other adjustments may include additional time, braille,
rest breaks, oral/sign support, coloured changes to support readers with
dyslexia.
Our Case Managers for Students with Disabilities work
with parents on appropriate adjustments prior to any testing.
Withdrawals and
Exemptions:Exemptions may be granted for students with a
language background other than English or for students with a disability. In
both cases, schools need to discuss the proposed exemption with the student's
parent/carer and gain their permission prior to testing.
You
are more than welcome to withdraw your
student from NAPLAN for religious or philosophical beliefs.
The
