Ambassador Training Day - Tangalooma Island Excursion

Excursion Description:

As part of the EcoMarines program at Capalaba State College, our EcoMarines Ambassadors are invited to Tangalooma Island Resort along with student ambassadors from other EcoMarines schools to learn about our environment and how they can help protect it. Activities during the day may include: presentations and workshops; developing a school action plan; a scavenger hunt; beach activities/sports and swimming in shallow water; dolphin presentation and feeding.


Location Address:

Tangalooma Island Resort, Moreton Island.


Transport:

Students will be transported to and from the ferry terminal at 220 Holt, St., Pinkenba. They will meet Mrs Phillips, then catch the ferry to and from Moreton Island.


Departure Time:

9:00am (meet teacher at Ferry Terminal); 9:40 Board Ferry. Boat Departs at 10am.


ARRIVAL TIME:

8:25pm approximately - boat arrive back at Holt St wharf. Parents meet Mrs Phillips at wharf to transport their own child home.

Activity Risk Management Strategies:

1. Arrival/Departure at Holt St. Wharf- students and parent/carer to meet teacher at sign in stand at times in permission letter, roll marked, medications checked and students briefed on safety. Students to stay in teacher care, then be released to parent/carer after excursion. Teacher carries mobile phone to contact parents for changes to ferry schedule. The phone number will be provided to parents prior to the excursion departure.  Teacher to ensure all students depart safely and instruction given about following road rules in carpark/ferry terminal area.

2. Transport by ferry/boat to and from Tangalooma Island:

a. Boarding: non-skid surfaces, safety signage, rounded edge gangways, handrails, staff manned gangway; hats and sunscreen to be worn, trained crew. Instruction given to walk only.

b. Falling from boat movement: safety warnings given to hold handrails when moving around vessel, handrails on seats and deckheads, staff assist passengers with movement if needed. Students to remain seated at all appropriate times. Students walk around boat as necessary, no running.

c. Man overboard: all handrails, bulwarks and gates are at regulation height, passengers informed to remain seated in rough weather, safety briefing/evacuation procedures given by staff on board.

d. Burn from hot food/drink: not to be purchased onboard, fitted lids on drinks.

e. Hygiene: to be adhered to, wash hands with soap.

f. Spills: cleaned immediately.

g. Slips/trips on stairs or other objects– non-slip surface, use of hand rail, teacher assistance when necessary, small steps marked with yellow edge. Crew to secure and tidy loose lifejacket straps, luggage.

h. Jammed fingers in doors: doors fitted with self-closing gas strut.

i. Seasickness: sit towards stern of boat, passengers advised on sea conditions.

3. Medical conditions and motion sickness - Teacher manages first aid as needed, medical records updated by parent/s with school, teacher carries mobile phone, medications, and medical/emergency contact list. Emergency services are contacted for serious injuries.

4. Falling off jetty/ tripping on Jetty or beach- Barriers along jetty, no climbing on barriers – maintain vigilance, students supervised at all times. Walking only. Students wear closed toe walking shoes. Access to first aid & phones.

5. Wandering off on arrival/general safety - Students assemble on arrival for safety briefing and instruction to remain in groups. Low teacher to student ratio for supervision -1:4.

6. Presentations, workshops, scavenger hunt; and beach activities (sand castles competition, beach sports – cricket, frisbees, volleyball, group walk) – safety briefings given upon arrival, area checked for hazards, repellent, sunscreen and hats worn, supervising teacher and EcoMarine Staff member with current First Aid certificate.

7. Swimming in shallow water - Students made aware of the rules & expectation of the activity. Teacher to be aware of student's swimming abilities and plan accordingly. Small teacher to student ratio 1:4. Area for swimming is shallow, no-wave zone. Maintain distance from jetty pylons to avoid oyster/barnicle cuts.

8. Dolphin Feeding activity – 1:4 Teacher to student ratio. Qualified instructors. Drink bottles are taken and food provided. Tangalooma Water Sports and Tanga Tours have staff trained for water rescues. Access to first aid and phones. Limited depth of area accessible by students. Jetty pylons, climbing on barrier prohibited, running not allowed. Closed in walking shoes worn. Safety instructions given by educators on correct human dolphin interaction and feeding, and correct holding of fish. Teacher to check for allergies to fish. No touching of the dolphins. Students guided and supervised at all times by trained staff.

5. Hot weather exposure - students bring hats, water bottles, wear sunscreen and shirts. Activities carried out in the shade where possible. Teacher aware of symptoms of heat/severe sun exposure.

6. Slips/trips/falls/ exposure to hazards - staff check area for hazards prior to activities, teacher monitors.

7. Theft of property - students are asked not to bring phones, valuables, etc. as backpacks are left in communal school bag area, area monitored by teacher when possible, but there are some activities conducted away from bag area. Teacher will carry mobile phone and contact parent if needed.

8. Stranger interaction - students advised not to liaise with members of public. Teacher to remain vigilant, students to leave site in groups and go to toilets in groups where possible.


Dress Code:

EcoMarines t-shirt, wide-brimmed school hat and shorts, walking shoes/joggers, thongs, water shoes (for dolphin feeding), swim suit, change of clothes, jumper and long pants, two pairs of socks (one worn, one extra).


Other:

Water bottle, snacks, sunglasses, bug spray, sunscreen (Reef Safe if possible), towel, bag for wet clothes. Extra snacks if desired, but not needed.

*Students will not have to carry their bag around throughout the day; there is a room reserved for the bags.


Activity Costs:

Cost is covered by the school.


Privacy Notice:

The Department of Education and Training (DET) is collecting the personal information requested as part of this excursion process in order to:

  1. obtain lawful consent for your child to participate in the activity;

  2. help coordinate the activity;

  3. respond to any injury or medical condition that may arise during, or as a result of the activity; and

  4. update school records where necessary.

 

The information will only be accessed by authorised school staff and will be dealt with in accordance with the confidentiality requirements of as applicable, s.426 of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 (Qld) and the Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld) and/or the Privacy Act 1988 (Commonwealth).

 

The information will not be disclosed to any other person or agency unless the disclosure is authorised or required by law, or you have given the Department permission for the information to be disclosed.

 

As excursions and camps are conducted away from school grounds, there is an increased duty of care, responsibility, and accountability placed on staff as there are fewer support resources available. Students who are deemed to have demonstrated regular, inappropriate, unacceptable and/or unsafe behaviours while in the capacity of a Capalaba State College student, may pose an unacceptable risk to the school’s obligations under duty of care. Decisions about whether a student will attend an excursion or camp will be made by the Principal in consultation with the Deputy Principal and Year Level Coordinator after conducting a risk assessment in consultation with the parent of the student. The student and their family will be advised accordingly after a decision has been made. Students who are unable to attend an excursion or camp will have alternative arrangements made for a program of work to be undertaken at school for the duration of the activity.

 

Students will be expected to comply with the terms of the Student Code of Conduct (2020 - 2023) for the duration of this activity.

  

Activity Risks & Insurance:

Please note that the Department of Education and Training (DET) does not have personal accident insurance cover for students. If your child is injured as a result of an accident or incident while participating in the activity, all costs associated with the injury, including medical costs are the responsibility of the parents/carers. Some incidental medical costs may be covered by Medicare. If you have private health insurance, some costs may also be covered by your provider. Any other costs must be covered by parents/carers. It is up to all parents/carers to decide what types and what level of private insurance they wish to arrange to cover their child. Please take this into consideration in deciding whether or not to allow your child to participate in this activity.

 

The school collected medical information about your child at enrolment. This information is stored electronically in OneSchool. Please indicate by selecting the most appropriate answer below as to whether you need to provide us updated medical information relevant to the student attending the excursion as this may effect your child's full participation in the activity described in the form.

 

Acknowledging

  1. I have read all of the information contained in this form in relation to the activity (including any attached material);

  2. I am aware that the department does not have personal accident insurance cover for students;

  3. I give consent for my child/student to participate in the identified activity;

  4. I will pay to the school the costs detailed in this consent form for your student's participation in the activity;

  5. I agree to and understand the refund policy as it applies to this excursion (see Activity costs);

  6. In the event of an accident or illness, school staff may obtain or administer any medical assistance or treatment the child/student may reasonably require, including contacting their doctor;

  7. I accept liability for all reasonable costs incurred by the department in obtaining such medical assistance or treatment (including any transportation costs) and undertake to reimburse the department the full amount of those costs;

  8. I have provided the school with all relevant details of the child/student's medical or physical needs on registration/enrolment and where relevant have updated this information;

  9. I give consent for student contact information to be shared in relation to this activity in compliance with relevant Queensland Chief Health Officer's Directions.
